In the days before fame Elvis would often window shop at the Lansky Brothers clothes store on Beale Street in Memphis. This is the store Elvis would buy his wardrobe from in the beginning of his fame.

Elvis liked what he saw in the store. What attracted him most were the different styles on display. Bernard Lansky, the owner of the store went to the outside of the window where Elvis stood admiring the fashion on display, Bernard greeted Elvis and invited him into the store to look around.

Elvis would make comment on the style of goods on display, saying to Bernard Lansky "I like all of this. It's fantastic. I don't have any money now, but when I get rich, I'll buy you out."

Bernard Lansky often seen Elvis walk up and down Beale street admiring his shop window, when Elvis was working at the theatre just around the corner from the Lansky Brothers clothes store, every Friday Elvis would buy a shirt from the store. In those days Elvis wore his hair all combed back in a ducktail, playing his guitar and working for the Sun Recording Company.

Elvis Presley Presley had a contract, he was off to New York to appear on Ed Sullivan...Tommy Dorsey, Jimmy Dorsey television show. He needed new clothes which he would get from the Lansky Brothers clothes store, Elvis explained he had no money to pay for the new outfit. Bernard Lansky made arrangements to give Elvis an account, taking care of him in this way, Elvis paid for his new clothes and remained a regular customer at the Lansky Brothers Beale street clothes store.

After the television shows he was on the Louisiana Hayride and before he knew it he was getting gigs all over the country, everyone wanted to dress like Elvis. Once people discovered where Elvis got his clothes from, everybody would go to the Lansky Brothers clothes store and buy the same clothes Elvis wore.

Bernard Lansky sold Elvis a black pair of pants with pink stitching with out the back pockets, with flair at the bottom of them, Barnard made Elvis a gold lame' jacket. That jacket was shown in the Hard Rock Cafe' in Vegas.

Bernard Lansky asked for no payment for the gold lame' jacket, Bernard’s clothes business was being advertised with the clothes Elvis wore, people would go to buy a gold lame' jacket of their own.

Elvis continued to buy from Lansky Brothers clothes store until the end of his life. The Lansky Brothers used to ship a lot of stuff out to Graceland. Bernard would always have Elvis in mind on the market day trips. Elvis liked to wear long coats with fur collars and leather coats.

In 1970, Bernard Lansky made Elvis eight long coats for him, eight different kinds. He mainly liked the leather coats and fur coats. Bernard also made a couple of hats for him.

Bernard knew what Elvis liked and wanted. Elvis wanted something different, he wanted to be different. Clothes were made to suit his style.Mr Bernard Lansky now sells clothes worldwide through his website. He has four stores in Memphis at the Peabody Hotel. The Lansky Brothers clothes store has been on Beale Street for fifty years which is still going strong today.

Mr. Lansky last saw Elvis at Graceland not long before he died. When Elvis spoke to Bernard he always called him Mr. Lansky. Right from the time they first met up till he died, Elvis never called Bernard Lansky by his christen name. Elvis was raised a gentleman and would address people as Mr. or Sir.
