As lead singer and lyricist for the Doors, Jim Morrison made the most of his short life, inspiring with his truthful writing and relaxed, authentic vocal style.
A psychedelic rocker with a poetic soul, Morrison was a connoisseur of things new and offbeat, experimenting with everything from Nietzsche to the bohemian underworld of California.
Born James Douglas Morrison in 1943, the future rock star grew up in Melbourne, Florida. Jim Morrison's upbringing was strict and conservative as the son of a Navy Admiral. In fact, it was not until college that Morrison even showed an interest in the arts.
While studying film at UCLA, he began reading William Blake and writing original poetry. In 1965, Morrison and friend Ray Manzarek decided to form a band, recruiting two more along with Robbie Krieger and John Densmore.
The group became known as The Doors, a reference to Aldous Huxley's Doors of Perception.
Although originally shy in his role as lead vocalist, Morrison emerged as a powerful performer. He went to great lengths to elicit a reaction from his audience, destroying musical equipment and indulging in a variety of drugs and alcohol onstage. After a 1969 Miami arrest for public exposure, Morrison and the Doors took a break from touring and recorded the groundbreaking albums Morrison Hotel and L.A. Woman.
In March of 1971, Morrison moved to Paris, hoping to focus on his writing. Only four months later Jim was found dead in his bathtub, presumably of a heart attack. He was 27 years old.
Jim Morrison was one of the most original lyricists in the history of rock and roll. The poetic imagery that characterized his writing was the perfect complement to the Doors' eclectic sound. Morrison's life and music were so closely intertwined that he has become the classic representation of the rebellious desires that define rock.
Jim Morrison had many nicknames. He often referred to himself as "Mr. Mojo Risin'", an anagram of his legal name, or the "Lizard King" from his epic poem "Celebration of the Lizard"
Fans and historians alike have long questioned the details of Morrison's death. Some believe him to be the victim of a drug overdose, while others blame the CIA. There are even those who speculate that he is alive to this day, living in Africa or the Seychelles Islands.
- Above all else, Morrison was a poet. His body is buried in Paris's famous Pere LaChaise cemetery in the company of many other celebrities. Next to him in the "Poet's Corner" are buried many celebrated writers, including Balzac, Moliere, and Oscar Wilde.
His genuinely shy manner and soft, quiet voice was in direct contrast to the always drunk and/or stoned satyr who sang with such strident urgency, as he appeared onstage.
Jim's grade school ambition was to become a writer. His idols were poets and joumalists including Rimbaud, Keats and Jack Kerouac.
As a student Jim excelled in text work and reference work, devouring knowledge in areas of history, science, psychology, english and the arts, but was troublesome in class. He learned to make friends fast and not get too close as his father being an Admiral in the navy and a career man, moved around the country frequently.
Jim went on to get a degree in Cinematography and actually made a movie. The film was greeted by a minority as a masterpiece and by several professors as the worst film they had ever seen. "Wierd" would have been a more appropriate description. Not long after that he bumped into an old class mate, Ray Manzerak, and decided to join Ray's band 'Screamin ' Ray Daniels ' — and try out some of his Iyrics. After a reshuffle in the band Ray and Jim with Robbie Krieger and John Densmore formed The Doors.
They called themselves The Doors after Aldous Huxley's 'The Doors Of Perception' and worked for six months ending up at the most important rock club in Los Angeles, Wiskey a Go Go. By this time Jim was singing his own heady material and The Doors were fast gaining a loyal core of fans.
One night Electra Record Company's president Jac Holzman, and producer Paul Rothschild, dropped in at the club and signed the band, on the spot, for ten thousand dollars. That summer of 1967 their first album 'The Doors' was released and immediately hailed as a masterpiece.
'Light My Fire' the single off the album was a smash hit. Their next album 'Strange Days ' solidified The Doors ' success. -With two albums in the top ten, headline concerts causing riots and hit singles, Jim achieved his aim of becoming hero and controversial spokesman, blending poetry and insanity.
The Doors became myth makers, the group who sang about sex, doom, the revolution and death, and Jim a performer of enormous capabilities. With his picture on the cover of practically all teen magazines in America, and heralded 'The King of Acid Rock', 'The King of Orgasmic Rock ', 'The Ultimate Barbie Doll ' and 'The Lizard King' Jim was every girl's dream and every boy's self image.
Jim was becoming notorious for his drug taking, taking and fast living and by the time The Doors third album 'Waiting For The Sun' came out, his popularity had begun to wane as his fans watched him become drunker and fatter.
Arrests after The Doors' Miami concert of March 2nd 1969 for "lewd and lascivious behaviour" sparked a nation wide ban on the group, resulting in exclusion from 16 states, and Jim began to rebel against the image he had created, shedding his leathers in fear of another bust. Twelve previous arrests had not left their mark, but this was the first time his arrest had serious repercussions.
Their next album 'The Soft Parade'released in the summer of 1969 did not make the impact of the earlier albums and although 'Morrison Hotel' released in early 1970 redeemed them somewhat, the future of The Doors was at best, uncertain.
Jim was not unaware of his own absurdity and the Iyrics of 'Absolutely Live' (1970) belie his disillusionment ....
"Dead cat in a top hat, Thinks he's an aristocrat That's crap"
With the finish of the bluesy and intermittently successful album 'L.A. Woman', Morrison headed for Paris. He was probably looking for renewed inspiration in the birth place of French symbolist poetry and-surrealism.
So Jim met his partner Pamela in Paris and his restless soul finally found peace when he died in his bath tub on July 3rd, 1971. Speculations as to the cause of his death abound and their are some who even proclaim that he is still alive.
Before he went to France he had recorded a legacy to Doors fans and the world at large with some of his poetry.
In 1978 the remaining Doors' members, Ray Manzerak, Robbie Krieger and John Densmore got together and put his poetry to music for the latest album 'An American Prayer' In it Jim seems to be prophesing his own death and welcoming it, through lines such as
"Death makes angels of us all & gives us wings
Where we had shoulders smooth as raven's claws
No more money, no more fancy dress
This other Kingdom seems by far the best
Until its other jaw reveals incest
& loose obedience to a vegetable law
I will not go
Prefer a Feast of Friends
To the Giant Family. "

Jim was buried July 8, 1971 at Pere-Lachaise cemetary in Paris, France. Pere-Lachaise is one of Paris' oldest, most prestigious cemetaries. Many famous people are buried here including, Chopin and Oscar Wilde.
Jim's plot was originally leased for a thirty year period, due to expire in 2001. This has fueled the rumour that his body is going to be removed from Pere-Lachaise during that year. This is because the relatives of the deceased at Pere-Lachaise have petitioned to have his body removed.
The reason given is that many people who call themselves fans have desecrated tombs and headstones with graffiti and left behind much litter after visiting the cemetary. It is not known where Jim is to be moved to, but the popular rumour is that he will be moved to Los Angeles.
Pamela Susan Courson Morrison died April 25, 1974 in her Hollywood apartment of a heroin overdose. Pamela's parents originally intended to have her buried with Jim at Pere-Lachaise cemetary. Pamela's father listed Pere LaChaise as the burial place on her death certificate.
However, due to the enormous red- tape involved in transporting a body to a foreign country for burial, herparents had her cremated remains buried at Fairhaven Memorial Park in Santa Ana, California

The liner notes say this album was recorded in New York and Philadelphia. Based on Jim's conversations with the audience, the New York material is almost certainly from the shows on January 17 & 18, 1970 at the Felt Forum.
The Philadelphia show was either the one in the summer of '69 or the one at the Spectrum in April 1970. Hopkins & Sugerman's book No One Here Gets Out Alive, however, claims that this recording of The Celebration Of The Lizard was from the Aquarius Theatre in Hollywood.
Who Do You Love is definitely from Philadelphia, and When The Music's Over is definitely from New York.
All the songs on this album are available on the In Concert 2-CD set.

(November 1983, available on CD)
Gloria / Light My Fire (including Graveyard Poem) / You Make Me Real / Texas Radio And The Big Beat / Love Me Two Times / Little Red Rooster / Moonlight Drive (including Horse Latitudes)
The liner notes say these songs were recorded between 68-70 in Los Angeles, New York, Detriot, Boston and Copenhagen. The Copenhagen tracks are Texas Radio And The Big Beat and Love Me Two Times, which were recorded for a TV show in Denmark in 1968.
Gloria was the sound check for one of the two Monday night performances at the Aquarius Theatre in Hollywood, July 1969. The presence of John Sebastian marks Little Red Rooster as coming from the Felt Forum, New York shows on January 17 and 18, 1970.
The only concerts in Detroit and Boston that I know of are the April 9, 1970 Boston show and the 1970 Cobo Hall show in Detroit.
All the songs on this album are available on the In Concert 2-CD set.

This album is an encapsulation of all the material from Absolutely Live and Alive She Cried, with the live Roadhouse Blues that was issued as a single in 1979, the version of The Unknown Soldier from Live At The Hollywood Bowl, and the previously unreleased The End, also from the Hollywood Bowl concert.
The liner notes list Los Angeles, New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Detroit and Copenhagen as being recording sites for this compilation. The material from Absolutely Live (the entire first disc and Close To You) was recorded in is from New York and Philadelphia.
The tracks from Alive She Cried (from Gloria through Moonlight Drive/Horse Latitudes on the second disc) are from Los Angeles, New York, Detriot, Boston and Copenhagen.
The Hollywood Bowl is in Los Angeles, so the two tracks from that concert are accounted for. Only Roadhouse Blues and Pittsburgh remain, so it is probably safe to assume that track is from that location.

July 3, 1971: Jim Morrison dies at the age of 27.
"Death makes angels of us all and gives us wings where we had shoulders smooth as raven's claws. No more money, no more fancy dress This other kingdom seems by far the best until it's other jaw reveals incest and loose obedience to a vegetable law. I will not go Prefer a Feast of Friends To the Giant Family." — Jim Morrison
James Douglas Morrison Born December 8, 1943, Melbourne, Florida was found dead in the bathtub at approximately 5:00 am on July 3, 1971. On July 2, Jim had accompanied Pamela Courson to see a movie. After watching the movie they returned to their apartment, and he went to bed.
He awoke some time later coughing and complaining of chest pains. He decided to take a bath. On the morning of July 3, Pamela awoke to see Jim still in the bathtub. She went into the bathroom and discovered he was dead. The death certificate simply stated he died as a result of heart failure.
It was speculated that a blood clot from a respiratory illness made its way through his bloodstream where it stopped his heart, while he took his bath. There has since been speculation that Jim died of a drug overdose, possibly taking heroin thinking that it was cocaine. However there is no proof and no autopsy was ever performed
