"Can't Help Falling in Love" is a pop song based on "Plaisir d'amour" by Giovanni Martini that was re-written for the 1961 film "Blue Hawaii", starring Elvis Presley, by George Weiss, Hugo Peretti and Luigi Creatore. During the course of the following 45 years or so, it has been recorded by numerous other artists, most notably by the UK group UB40 in the early 1990s. That version topped the UK singles chart, as had the original by Presley.
In the US, the Elvis Presley recording was released by RCA Victor Records as catalog number 47-7968 in 1961, peaking at #2 on the Billboard charts in that year, and at #4 on the Cash Box magazine Best-Selling Records list in January of the following year.
In 1968, the song was given a new live treatment, as performed by Presley in both the sit-down and stand-up segments of his 1968 NBC-TV special and, starting in July of the following year, used almost invariably to close his live concerts, including his last, at the old Indianapolis Market Square Arena, in late June of 1977.
The Perry Como recording was made on June 26, 1962, and never issued as a single, but included in his album, By Request (RCA Victor Records catalog number LSP-2567) issued September 1962.
The Al Martino recording was released by Capitol Records as catalog number 2746 and charted in 1970, peaking at #51 on the Billboard charts and #57 on the Cash Box magazine Best-Selling Records list.
The Corey Hart recording in 1987 reached #27 on the Billboard charts.
In 1993, British reggae band UB40's cover of Can't Help Falling In Love eventually climbed to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 after debuting at number 100.
The song is also featured in the Disney movie Lilo and Stitch sung by the A*Teens. It has also been adopted as the standard supporters' song of the English football club Sunderland.
In early 2006, a new version of the song was recorded by Andrea Bocelli, and included in his Top 3 Billboard album, "Amore".
